The Great Migration Safari
Witness nature's most extraordinary wildlife spectacle across the plains of East Africa
Nature's Greatest Journey
The Great Migration stands as one of nature's most awe-inspiring phenomena, where over two million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, embark on a circular journey across the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water sources.
This continuous movement isn't a single event but rather a perpetual cycle of life, following the rhythms of the seasonal rains. The herds move in a clockwise pattern through Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Maasai Mara Reserve, covering nearly 1,800 miles annually in their relentless pursuit of sustenance.
The migration features approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, joined by around 400,000 Thomson's gazelles, 300,000 zebras, and 12,000 eland. These massive herds traverse multiple territories, creating a dynamic ecosystem where predators eagerly anticipate their arrival.

'The migration isn't simply a movement from one place to anotherβit's the rhythm of life itself across the savanna, where the only beginning is birth and the only ending is death.'
β Dr. Richard Estes, Renowned Wildlife Biologist
Highlights of the Migration
Migration Facts
- The entire migration circuit covers approximately 1,800 miles annually
- Over 400,000 calves are born during a 2-3 week period in February
- Wildebeest can travel up to 30 miles in a single day when conditions demand
- The migration involves crossing multiple rivers, including the treacherous Mara River
- Approximately 250,000 wildebeest die during the journey each year
The Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem
This remarkable natural theater unfolds across the expansive Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem, covering approximately 30,000 square kilometers. The ecosystem is defined by the dominant migration routes of the iconic wildebeest and encompasses various protected areas:

Serengeti National Park forms the core of this ecosystem in Tanzania, offering vast open plains that support incredible biodiversity. Adjacent to it is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which provides critical calving grounds during the early months of the year.
To the north, Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve serves as the migration's northern extent, where the most dramatic river crossings occur from July to October. This interconnected system of protected areas ensures the migration can continue its ancient patterns, though increasing pressures from human development pose ongoing challenges.
